Our Lady of the Sea
The name Our Lady of the Sea is truly enchanting and magical; that was my first thought when I first learned about it. This church is situated in the city of Batroun in Northern Lebanon. I was lucky to have visited one of the most famous historical churches. I accidentally found this beautiful place while I was on my way to visit the famous Phoenician Wall.

This small Greek Orthodox church is simple yet profoundly beautiful. It consists of one main space with an altar and a quiet place for prayer. Built right on the water’s edge, it overlooks the remains of a Phoenician sea wall, offering breathtaking sea views. The terrace, with its arched belvedere, frames the horizon in a scene of pure serenity. The church’s vaulted ceiling and thick stone walls reflect Batroun’s traditional sandstone architecture, with a single barrel vault extending east to west. Although the exact date of construction remains unknown, it houses exquisite golden icons created by Isaac of Jerusalem in 1863.
Built on the ruins of a Byzantine church in the 19th century, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Sea is surrounded by a spacious courtyard that overlooks the water.

The location of this church makes it a must-visit; the view of the sea is simply breathtaking. It was so beautiful that it was truly difficult for me to leave. This church is small, cozy, and filled with positive energy. I felt peaceful, satisfied, and completely content with where I was. It’s strange, because I have never felt this way in any other holy place.

It is said that this church was built atop a pagan Phoenician temple. The present structure dates back to 1860, and its recently renovated staircase leads, through a northern door, to a roofed passage stretching westward with large columns on both sides. Another single aisle leads to a two-door Byzantine-style altar with a built-in arch on its far wall. The ceiling rises high in classic Byzantine fashion, illuminated by windows and small openings. Along the northern wall stands the traditional sandstone baptismal tub. Inside the church are several icons painted in 1863, and the icon of Our Lady of the Sea is considered miraculous.
